It's over. So why don't I feel done?

We’ve been trying to sell my parents’ condo since it went on the market last September. The sale was necessary so my parents could move into an independent apartment in a senior living community, one that offers memory care for my dad when the time comes. It took so much longer than we imagined, and there were times when I feared we wouldn't.

Last week was a finish line. My parents were packed up, moved, and unpacked. The condo finally sold. And we got an offer on the condo within a day of the newly renovated room in the new community becoming available. The closing and move-in dates lined up like they were choreographed. I'm so grateful for the synchronicity.

Being the primary support for aging parents with complicated relationships while also being responsible for your own family is hard. Especially when they live over 90 minutes away. I know many of you know.

Even though I visualized it all working out, I also lived with a constant hum of uncertainty for months. It created a weighty emotional charge in my body that I didn't fully realize I was carrying.

Last week, I felt some relief. But I also still felt unsettled. So I sat down and had a conversation with myself in my journal. My wise self reminded me that our bodies don't automatically let go just because the event is over. When an emotional charge builds up, it needs somewhere to go. It needs to be discharged.

I was still feeling that tight hum in my body.

We may know how to get through a hard season, but we don't always know how to complete one. We can cross the finish line and then immediately start scanning for the next fire to put out. It's normal for us to get through the deadline or handle the crisis, and then we move right on to the next hard thing without ever actually acknowledging or releasing it inside ourselves.

In the case of my parents' move, is everything over and complete? No, they are having some trouble adjusting; their computer got a virus, etc. But life rarely wraps everything neatly in a bow.

I don't think resilience is built by pushing through. I think resilience is built when we intentionally:

Release the weight.
Honor the experience.
Celebrate what was accomplished.
And perhaps gain some wisdom through the process.

I'm sharing my story because I know many of you are carrying invisible responsibilities and moving through hard seasons of your own. We need to remember how to integrate what we've been through, so our minds, hearts, and bodies can catch up to what has already happened, so we can truly let it go.

This is what integration looks like for me:

I’ll have a network spinal entrainment to support my nervous system. But I can also do some breathing exercises, gentle movement, or even a good cry to help my body release and feel safe.

I'll sit with my journal and write to process. I'll thank and honor myself for everything I did and everything I've been carrying these past few months.

And then even though everything isn't fully finished, it's important for me to celebrate what is and acknowledge the miracles along the way. (Not just remember the struggle). The celebration doesn’t need to be a big production. It just needs to have the energy of celebration. It could even be dancing it out in the kitchen.

Part of my integration is talking it over with a good friend. Being witnessed by someone else really helps me. And part of it is writing to you. The focus isn't rehashing the hard parts. It's to metabolize the whole experience so it can actually be digested rather than just stored.

A Gentle Invitation

If you've been through a hard season, I'd invite you into integration before you move on to the next thing:

  • What is still living inside you from the experience?
  • What needs to be grieved?
  • What deserves to be honored and celebrated?
  • How can you release this from your body?
  • What wisdom can you take away?

You don't have to have it all figured out to start. Just pick one of these questions and sit with it. I always love hearing from you- hit reply and tell me what you're releasing, or what you're celebrating, or what you are taking away. I do read every email that comes through.
